The Movies of Features the Winter Olympics
1) Cool Runnings
A timeless classic, “Cool Runnings” is a film about perseverance in the face of adversity that takes place in the world of winter sports.
This 1993 movie was supposed to be a drama about the legendary Jamaican 4-man bobsleigh team that competed in the Calgary 1998 Olympic Winter Games, but it ended up being a comedy about the athletes’ misadventures as they learned the sport in the few months leading up to the biggest competition on the planet.

2) Miracle
This 2004 film is a must-see for any ice hockey enthusiast, as it recounts the true story of the ‘Miracle on Ice,’ when the United States men’s team shocked the Soviet Union in the gold-medal game of the 1980 Olympic Winter Games at Lake Placid.
Movie star Kurt Russell plays ice hockey coach Brooks, and the film is lauded for its realistic on-ice action thanks to the inclusion of real players.
3) Ice Castles
This figure skating film wasn’t based on a true story, but it nonetheless managed to win over viewers all over the world and get an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song in 1979.
The story follows Lexie, a talented skater whose vision is permanently impaired when she sustains a brain damage in a skating accident. Nick, her ex-boyfriend, talks her into coming back out on the ice and continuing to chase her aspirations. Obviously, it’s perfect for a Christmastime makeout session.
4) Eddie The Eagle
This 2016 film is based on the life of charismatic Olympic skier Michael Edwards, whose narrative is another fantastic Cinderella story from the Winter Games. After starting out as a plasterer in the UK, he qualified for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary as the first British ski jumper since 1928.
Eddie the Eagle was one of the most popular Winter Olympic athletes despite being dead last in both of his sports. His thick glasses and witty one-liners, such as “I’d like to say I flew like an eagle, but I was probably closer to the ostrich,” helped make him a fan favourite.

5) A Red Army (2014)
“Red Army,” a documentary by Gabe Polsky, does a great job of investigating the success of the Russian Olympic hockey team, how the Russians elevated the sport to something of an art form, and how it became an integral part of Soviet society before “Icarus” uncovered the Russian doping issue.
The former players questioned express a startling range of emotions, from pride in their country’s accomplishments to recognition of the extraordinarily difficult training and living conditions. If you’re not a hockey fan or don’t care whose team won the American Miracle, you’ll still enjoy this documentary.
