What is a Triple Toe Loop?

One of the most popular Winter Olympic events, figure skating often attracts viewers who aren’t very invested in the sports. You may have trouble telling the many leaps that figure skaters perform apart if you are not a dedicated fan of the sport.

Learn the Differences Between Them Here!

It’s crucial to remember that each skate blade has two edges and a bend or hollow in the centre. By putting one foot in front of the other, you may identify the inside edges as the ones that touch your soles. Edges that are not visible from the inside are the outer edges.

What is a Triple Toe Loop

Most skaters prefer to land on their right foot and spin anticlockwise, but others have found that landing on their left foot and spinning clockwise gives them more control. To make things simple, we’ll assume that the skater is right-footed and prefers to go anticlockwise in the instances that follow.

That a jump is considered a “single,” “double,” “triple,” or “quad” merely refers to the number of times the skater spins while in the air.

Let’s check out the three-toe-jump sequence now. The toe pick on the front of the skate is used in all of them as a springboard to help the skater get airborne.

Foot Loom

The leap is executed in reverse, beginning on the outside edge of the right skate and finishing there as well.

Flip

Moving in reverse, the skater pushes off from the inside edge of the left skate and lands on the outer edge of the right skate.

Lutz

Like a flip, but with the skater launching themselves from the outside of the left foot and landing on the right foot.

Let’s take a look at some edge jumps without the use of a toe pick.

Salchow

The skater takes off from the inside edge of the left skate and lands on the outer edge of the right as they glide backward.

Loop

The leap is executed in reverse, beginning on the outside edge of the right skate and finishing there as well.

Axel

Since this is the only one in which the skater is looking ahead at launch, it will be easy to spot.

The forward skate is used as a launch pad, while the backward skate is used to land the trick. This is the most challenging jump because you have to do an extra half spin to land in the opposite direction.

For reference, a double axil is 2 and a half revolutions, as we discussed earlier when talking about doubles, triples, etc. Triple axels have a diameter of 3 and a half inches.
