Mozart’s extraordinary talent was evident even when he was a little child. From the age of five, he was already composing and playing the keyboard and violin in front of European nobility.

On January 27, 1756, at No. 9 Getreidegassein Salzburg, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born to Leopold Mozart (1719-1787) and Anna Maria, née Pertl (1720-1778). In the days when Austria was still a part of the Holy Roman Empire, it served as the seat of the Archbishopric of Salzburg.

Five of his seven siblings had passed away before he was born. Mozart was christened at St. Rupert’s Cathedral the day after his birth, and his older sister, Maria Anna (1751-1829), was given the nickname “Nannerl.” The Latinized form of his name, Joannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart, appears in his baptismal record.

As an adult, he usually went by the name “Wolfgang Amadè Mozart,” though he also went by a number of other names.
